It's That Time of Year for Air

I don't know about you, but I find the large overhead fans in any room, especially in a bedroom, not very attractive. However, keeping the air moving can help in the colder months when the heat rises to the top of a room and in the warmer months when you need to cool down.

Let me introduce you to the Fandelier. It is NOT a fan with a light in it (which an instructor in Interior Design declared it was...I directed her to LampsPlus for a little instruction.). It is in fact a beautifully designed light with the fan housed inside of it so you do not see it but you will feel the effects of it. Most of them come with a remote control for the light and the fan combined. I have used them in my home and in the homes of my clients.

A Little Bit of Everything

Do you have one of those rooms in your home where everything goes, even if it doesn't make sense? Plus, you need a space for an office that ends up jammed into a corner? This homeowner knew this was not a keeper.

The homeowner desperately needed storage. This built-in was designed to do just that and so much more. Although I designed it, Classic Home Improvement built it, and together we collaborated to create this beautiful piece. Many memories have been captured in this built-in, which delighted the homeowner.

The Mural really was the main feature of the room. All color choices were based on the Mural. A very soft and soothing effect. Wouldn't you like to wake up and see that in the morning?

You can certainly rest beautifully in this brand new bed and bedding. In fact, you may not want ot get out of it. Again, the beautiful green bedding reflects a color in the Mural, as well as the additional pillows.

So, would you feel inspired in this space? I don't think so and neither did the homeowner.

I asked the homeowner what color would he like to see in his office and blue was the answer, but what shade of blue?As a Certified True Colour Specialist, I was able to identify two possibiities and this was the final answer. I used the same color but in a different finish to create the stripe.

Every office needs a Reading Corner to relax. This leather and herringbone chair is a perfect complement to the overal color in the space. It is so comfortable that he may find himself sitting there quite often.

And that rug! It's as if it was made just for this space with their name on it. It is so soothing to walk on barefooted if you dare.

The desk is a stunning piece made by Quality Wood Furniture. I selected the stain and wood choice with the homeowner and it is as solid as you can get. Compared to being stuck in a corner before, this is an absolute delight to spend time on the computer. There is a lateral file and bookcase that was also made for the office.

The homeowners enjoy going to little unique shops and antique shops. They have picked-up a number of really beautiful pieces. The two lamps are an example of their treasures, which were an inspiration to the overall aesthetic of the two rooms.

The homeowner is also a collector of beautiful perfume bottles that were displayed in one grouping, but we separated them out so she can enjoy them in the many spaces of the room. These are the details that make a home interesting and special.

What do you need?

That was the question to be answered for an office in my home where I could minimize distractions and interruptions, as I was working from my dining room table. (How many of us can relate to using the dining table for everything but dining?)

There was a very nice room in my home that offered me solitude and comfort to read, meditate and even have a private conversation with a friend.

This was the space I needed as an office. The closet was removed to open the space, and I designed a custom storage system that would provide space for a French antique desk.

The storage system incorporated cabinets and shelving with a design touch of a beautiful arch. Please note that the system was built by Tom Paull, owner of Classic Home Management. He did a beautiful job executing all the pieces as well as finishing the unit to look aged.

The inspiration for the space came from a watercolor painting of the courtyard of Chateau Douillett in Springfield. The courtyard features this beautiful fountain that is just exquisite. The painting was done by Newell Murray of Springfield.

Wallpaper is back in design as are arches and chandeliers

These elements are incorporated in the room as well. I have always loved wallpaper and use it throughout my home in specific areas.

Color drenching is another aspect of the design.

The storage unit, trim and ceiling are all painted in the same color but with a twist. The trim is in satin finish; the ceiling is matte and reduced by 25% saturation. Generally, it would be at 50% but I wanted to keep it a little darker than normal.

You will see that the settee is in the corner where the small closet was located, which still gives me that space to sit.

In summary, I have the best of both worlds. By identifying the need, I was able to find the answer within a space that was already available.

From the Darkness to the Light

"I need help!" My client's kitchen was updated 35 years ago with dark cabinets, a dark island and poor lighting. She said she didn't know exactly what she wanted but she knew she wanted "light and bright."

Before

The "elephant in the room" was a large support with a TV mounted on it and a architectural design on the ceiling. The support had to stay but the ceiling element had to go.

When the ceiling element was removed, it left a gaping 5' x 8' hole. Hence, a new ceiling was installed with better lighting. That alone made a huge change.

We chose a beautiful granite called 'brown fantasy' in a leathered finish. We reduced the size to a more reasonable 4' x 8' for the island, which allowed better flow for moving around the space.

We replaced the cooktop with a more energy efficient model and changed the faucet to a gooseneck in brushed nickle. The sink was replaced as well.

We decided to paint the the cabinets in BM Pale Oak and the island cabinets were painted BM Raintree.

The support was painted in Pale Oak also to make it less imposing in the space and removed the TV set up. The client loves signs so we put up a sign on the support which looks more inviting to the space.

Overall, the space feels fresh and open and very pleasing to the eye.

My client gave a wonderful review and expressed her delight in her now "light and bright" kitchen.

To Cover or Not to Cover...

There are dozens of different types of window treatments. If you’ve ever had to go through the process, it can be daunting and overwhelming with the many choices. Questions to ask yourself are what is the function of the window for the room? What is the mood of the room? Do you need privacy?

Window treatments can and will change the overall feel of a room. In this particular window, it faces West so late afternoon sun can be an issue; however, privacy is not an issue as the woods are a deterrent to anyone coming into the yard. Therefore, the homeowner needs to decide if the window should be Covered because of the sun or Uncovered.

The first window treatment was a beautiful custom cornice with satin side panels to soften the edges. But, the trend in décor became less formal.

So the next treatment for this window was to offer a covering from the late afternoon sun. This window treatment offered coverage with custom wovens on rollers. It helped but to get them even when they were rolled up was tricky. Also, the line it created going across the window caused the eye to only look at that level and not notice the wall above it. The look was okay but could it be better?

Complete change was made with a new wall color from Farrow and Ball called Off White, which can have a green undertone or a gray undertone depending on the lighting. This is beautiful paint but not for the beginner. You would want a professional painter to do the job.

So, the decision was made to leave the window open, embrace the outside and install drapery panels about 12 inches above the window frame. It elevates the space and gives the room an entirely different vibe. Can you see the difference between the three options?

Tale of Two Colors

Imagine sitting in an office being swallowed up by heavy dark furniture…you know the kind…cherry stain,

looming tower of shelving, heavy dark file cabinets, monstrous sideboard used as a storage cabinet, with only an opaque ceiling fixture for lighting. Unfortunately, there is no “Before” picture.

It had seen the best of times (the 1980s) and definitely needed a revival…a complete gut that only a sledge hammer could handle and a pick-up truck to cart everything away. Then the fun began with removal of wallpaper, which was meant to stay on the wall to the end of time. After much repair of holes in the wall (like a slew of pin holes from sticking papers up on the wall), it was time to put the space together with fresh paint and furniture. The room actually felt lighter and brighter.

The final result has Benjamin Moore French Toile as an accent wall, which is a lovely, serene blue and Benjamin Moore Pale Oak on the remaining walls and trim. Both of these colors have a grey undertone, which gives it a cohesive feel. Add to the room a new window treatment, some art and a fabulous light fixture that reflects off the ceiling and down light. The furniture is from Amazon and is a grey with black which works well with the new black carpet tiles.

So, what do you think about the end result?

Well, it was so well received that a request was made to upgrade a room to make it more of a conference/meeting room. Oh boy, this was an even bigger challenge. There was a door that had at one time led to a ladies bathroom, which was screwed into the wall. This had to be removed and reframed with new drywall to fix the wall. The room itself became a place to “dump” items that no one knew what to do with and didn’t want to throw away. Once again, fill up the dumpster.

The same two colors were used in this room as were used in the office…French Toile and Pale Oak. Only this time the French Toile went on all 4 walls with the Pale Oak on the trim only. The furniture is in a dark charcoal grey and came from Amazon, which works perfectly in the space and complements the blue wall color. It created a lovely space to have a meeting.

Of course, what’s done on one side of a wall effects what’s on the other side, which is the ladies room. Can you hear the groan? There was major repair work to the wall as well as the removal of wallpaper, which was beginning to fall off on its own. Again, a lot of time and sweat BUT it is now a welcoming space for the ladies to come and have a moment if needed with a place to put their bags and be refreshed.

Again, two colors only this time the Pale Oak is on the walls and the French Toile is on the ceiling….the “Fifth wall.” Have you ever painted the fifth wall a color other than white?

Change and More Change

I’ve heard it said that a hair stylist must embrace change with their own hair styles for their customers to embrace change as well. Anyone who knows me can vouch for the fact that I am always changing my hairstyle. For some people, change is exciting and for others, not so much.

I get it, but change can be good.

In 2014, we upgraded our kitchen…total gut. We took down a wall between the kitchen and the dining room, which greatly opened the space. In the picture, you will see an island with a stove top and oven in the center. The island was quite large and did not allow much space in front of the refrigerator.

It was also an eat-in kitchen, which felt tight in that space. We changed the space to house a beautiful buffet for more storage and made the dining room more usable for entertaining.

Please note that since then, some things have changed, which are noted below with pictures. Also, the article mistakenly gave the designer for the window treatments credit for the entire space; however, I am the designer.

To that end, the color in the kitchen has been changed again to a dark grey in Benjamin Moore/Thunder on the main wall with a lighter grey in Benjamin Moore/Nimbus on all the other walls. The dining room half wall is also dark grey in Benjamin Moore/Thunder with all the trim painted from white to the same color as the wall. It makes the space feel so rich and inviting. I took inspiration from a restaurant in Maine that we love to go to when we are there. It’s amazing what a little paint can do to create a different mood.

In 2022, the island had a major change again as well as the counter stools, including the upholstery. The island is painted in Benjamin Moore Advance/Raintree Green and, the stools are painted in Benjamin Moore/Lenox Tan in Pearl . The Advance is a water-based product with low VOCs so the odor is not like using an oil based paint. It’s also very durable. Perfect for use on kitchen cabinets, etc. If you’re thinking about painting your cabinets, doors or trim, I highly recommend this product.

It is hard to describe the lovely feeling of comfort and delight that I continue to enjoy since Elizabeth decorated my home. Each room affords me a unique sense of pleasure. The overall effect is a feeling of ease and relaxation that still surprises and delights my soul.

This home was a new build. Unfortunately, the owner, who was the builder, became critically ill. Therefore, not much happened in the way of decorating or pulling things together. In time, the owner passed away and my friend expressed how heavy the house felt, and it didn’t exactly feel like home. After listening to her for a bit, I said, “I can help you make this feel like your home if you would like that.” Short answer was, "Yes."

Shopping for furniture, shopping for light fixtures, and being able to choose the colors in her home were all new experiences for her. We chose a sofa that would fit the space well in a taupe, and the chair was just the right fit for her. We brought in a glass top table and a mercury lamp for soft lighting. The lamp in the corner also has glass to bring light to that corner.

In the bedroom, we added wallpaper to the main wall and a design element to the side wall, which was flat as there wasn’t much space between the bed and the wall but needed a little something to enhance the space.

I promised her that when we were done she would walk through the door after work and actually "feel" like it was her home.

Based on her comment above, I think we successfully created a home that is Comfortable, Enjoyable and Delightful.

The one place you do not want to put a mirror, according to Feng Shui, is across from your bed...unless the bed is not in a commanding position, which is to say that you can see the door when lying in your bed. If that is the case, place the mirror so you can see the door reflected in the mirror when lying in bed. You may need to get creative with how to place it.

The smaller riser can be found on Amazon and come in a pair. These can be painted or stained or left natural.

Elizabeth was able to walk into an empty room and understand my vision. Although I was leaning toward one wallpaper design, she showed me why the one I now have on my wall was the better choice. Evolution of a Fireplace

The first picture shows a faux finish on the wall, which was professionally done by the previous homeowner. This was early 2000s and very popular. The original wall did not have a fireplace shelf. We added this to give more dimension to the fireplace.

The second picture was about 10 years later. The wall was painted a dark grey and the fireplace box left white which was a nice contrast complementing the French doors.

The third picture is the most recent. Trim was added to the fireplace wall and the wall and fireplace box has been painted the same color to create a moodiness to the space. The wall around it has been painted a lighter grey.

Paint is like magic and the least expensive way to change the feel of a space.
